Overcrowding and unsafe staffing compromising patient care

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation has said that there still continues to be unacceptable numbers of patients on trolleys, chairs and in other inappropriate bed spaces today.

This comes as the union has recorded 660 patients who have been admitted to hospital without a bed as part of its TrolleyWatch count.

INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha said:

The high number of patients on trolleys again today is calling the safety of many hospitals into question.

As well as over 660 patients on trolleys, the HSE has recorded 787 patients on so-called surge beds. Many of these so-called surge beds are in completely inappropriate places in hospitals including ward sitting rooms, family rooms and small day wards. These beds are not staffed correctly and are not funded for overnight activity.

Staffing shortages continue to compromise the provision of safe and timely care across the public health service. Persistent reliance on trolleys and surge arrangements means many nurses are regularly working below safe staffing levels. In an increasing number of hospitals, roster gaps are no longer occasional but routine, creating unsafe conditions for both patients and staff.
