The INMO welcomes a review into hospital car parking charges following reports of 140% increase in hospital parking revenue.
An INMO spokesperson said:
In many hospital sites staff parking is inadequate and expensive. This is another cost burden for nurses and midwives providing essential services on behalf of the State. Nurses and midwives often drive long distances to work because of poor public transport links and a lack of affordable housing near hospitals. Nurses and midwives work shifts, often ending or beginning at unsocial hours. High car parking fees are a total disregard for the safety of a predominantly female workforce. Our members work long shifts, for many it is compounded by hours of commuting. There are many risks to exhausted nurses and midwives driving long distances home after their shifts, which has tragically been proven catastrophic for some of our members over the years.
