Limerick Hospital In Crisis. 16/01/07

PRESS RELEASE, Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

Today in excess of 36 patients are on trolleys, awaiting an in-patient bed, in the A&E Department and the Medical Day Ward at the Mid West Regional Hospital, Limerick. The 10 bedded overflow unit at the hospital is also full and there are no trolleys available.

This situation is unprecedented at the hospital and INO members are angry that management of the HSE have failed to put in place appropriate initiatives to help alleviate the increasing trolley numbers over the last 2 years i.e.:

  • Absence of a chest pain clinic despite funding being available for at least 2 years;
  • No progress on setting up a minor injuries clinic in the Emergency Department;
  • The absence of a proactive, robust, team based multidisciplinary approach in the management of this hospital

In addition, the absence of funding to put in place a medical assessment unit, admissions unit and discharge lounge has not helped matters.

Speaking this morning, INO Industrial Relations Officer, Mary Fogarty said:

“The INO is calling on the A&E Taskforce to immediately address the deteriorating situation at this hospital, for the sake of patients and staff, through a joint union/management forum.

As detailed, the funding already given to the hospital to develop services a couple of years ago has still not been spent and nurses have now lost all confidence in the ability of hospital management to cope with the demands of the service.”
