24 Beds To Close In St Vincent’S Hospital, Athy, Co Kildare

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation has learned that 24 beds are to close in St. Vincent’s Hospital, Athy, Co Kildare. This will be the second ward to close in this Care of the Elderly facility in recent years, as 26 beds were closed in the hospital in 2009. The INMO is today seeking an urgent meeting with HSE Management to discuss the issue.
The Organisation is now gravely concerned that the very future of the hospital is in doubt. It seems to be HSE policy to close all public beds, for the elderly, in Ireland.
Speaking today INMO Industrial Relations Officer, Derek Reilly said:

“It is apparent to our organisation that the primary reason for this closure is one of funding. There is sufficient staff within the hospital to keep the beds open. It is my understanding that no patients will be moved from the hospital but that as beds become vacant they will not be filled.  In effect St Vincent’s Hospital is now closed to any further admissions. This is another devastating blow to our elderly population and a further erosion of our health Services.”
