Update - Miscellaneous Matters: 24th July 2014

To:    All INMO Members

From:    Liam Doran, General Secretary

Re:    Update - Miscellaneous Matters

Dear Colleagues

I just want to give you a general update on matters arising over the last few weeks.

1.    Mr. Leo Varadkar - New Minister for Health

As all members will know Mr. Leo Varadkar TD, has recently been appointed as our new Minister for Health.  The Organisation all already written to Mr. Varadkar congratulating him, on his appointment, and wishing him well in his new post.  In addition we have also sought a very early meeting, when he returns from leave, to discuss the following:

  • the funding of our public health service and the critical issues of safety and quality arising from cutbacks over the past five years;
  • developing, and maintaining, a stable nursing and midwifery workforce (including the skill mix necessary to ensure optimum patient/client care at all times);
  • the further development of primary care services including a greatly enhanced role for nurses and midwives; and
  • the implications of the recent proposals, by the HSE, under the Haddington Road Agreement, for the quality of services available to patients.

The INMO looks forward to working, collaboratively and constructively, with the new Minister.  This must involve a change of existing policy thus ensuring adequate funding, and staffing, for the provision of safe care in our public health service.

A further update will issue following our first meeting with the new Minister probably in the early days of September.

2.    Patient First Campaign

A further update on this campaign is being sent out directly to members.  Please bring it to the attention of all members in your workplace/area.

3.    Holiday Period

In sending out this note I am conscious that we are now in the peak summer period when, hopefully, most members will have the opportunity to take some well-earned leave away from the stress of excessive workloads in the workplace.

On behalf of our President, Claire Mahon, our Executive Council and all staff, in the Organisation, can I, therefore, take the opportunity to wish every member, who is taking leave on or around this time, a restful break.

Finally, may I remind all members to monitor their emails, and our website, for ongoing updates regarding the details of our Patients First Campaign.

With kind regards and best wishes always.

Yours sincerely,

General Secretary
