ED Overcrowding Continues in UHG. 27.10.11
Full Capacity Protocol Implemented

Full Capacity Protocol Implemented, Thursday 27th October 2011

-   47 patients on trolleys in the ED awaiting an in-patient bed
-   25 beds closed in UHG, 91 beds closed in Merlin Park

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, (INMO), is seriously concerned at the level of overcrowding in University Hospital Galway (UHG) today. There were 47 patients waiting on trolleys for an in-patient bed this morning and overcrowding has increased to such a degree that the full capacity protocol has been activated. Conditions at the hospital are almost unbearable, for patients and staff alike.

There are currently 36 patients in the hospital who are fit for discharge into long term care.

Speaking today, INMO Industrial Relations Officer, Gavan Duffy said:

“The INMO is calling for the opening of the closed beds i.e.  25 in UHG and 91 in Merlin Park in order to take the pressure off UHG.  Overcrowded wards are not the solution to an overcrowded Emergency Department.
The recruitment moratorium is having a detrimental effect on services at the hospital and additional staff must be appointed, without delay, to help relieve the situation.

This overcrowding is occurring before the usual very busy winter season when chronic illnesses increase and adverse weather conditions see an increase in slips and falls etc.  We need action now to relieve the pressure on the ED before the situation becomes completely unmanageable.”
