ED Overcrowding In UHG Compromising Patient Safety Even  Though Full Capacity Protocol In Place For Two Days. 11.10.11

- 52 patients waiting on trolleys this morning
- 25 beds closed in UHG, 91 beds closed in Merlin Park
- Full capacity protocol activated yesterday

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, (INMO), is appalled at the ongoing level of overcrowding in University Hospital Galway (UHG). Today there are 52 patients on trolleys awaiting an in patient bed: 34 in the ED, 12 in the medical assessment unit, and 6 patients are being nursed on trolleys on wards throughout the hospital.  The overcrowding continues despite the fact that the full capacity protocol was invoked yesterday in an effort to relieve the situation.  Conditions at the hospital are almost unbearable, for patients and staff alike.

There is a bed capacity problem which has deteriorated further in recent weeks by delays in transferring patients, who no longer need acute care, into long term facilities. There are currently 42 patients fit for discharge in UHG. The hospital has 25 closed beds and 91 beds are closed in Merlin Park.

Speaking today, INMO Industrial Relations Officer Regina Durcan said:
“We are calling on the Minister for Health to intervene in this crisis and to open up closed beds with adequate staffing in order to alleviate the intolerable overcrowding within University Hospital Galway. The events in recent days are showing that the full capacity protocol is not working and only increases the risks to patients all over the hospital by overcrowding wards.”
