INMO Response To HSE Press Release On Tomorrow's Work Stoppage By INMO Members At The ED, MWRH, Limerick 20.09.11

In response to the HSE statement issued this afternoon (click here) regarding the four hour work stoppage scheduled for tomorrow by INMO members in the Emergency Department at the Mid Western Regional Hospital, Limerick, the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation must place on record the facts of this dispute which are as follows:

  • The Emergency Department in Limerick is unsafe and the level of nurses available to provide care is below the standard in other locations;
  • The INMO has repeatedly objected to the HSE supplying overtime and agency nurses as a solution to this issue;
  • The HSE failed until yesterday morning, having been prompted repeatedly by the INMO, to attend any contingency meeting; and,
  • The Mid Western Regional Hospital Limerick has, on a daily basis, extra trolleys and beds on already full in-patient wards and still the Emergency Department is overcrowded.  This is obviously not a solution.

This dispute flows directly from management’s failure to provide the required number of nursing staff to ensure, on a 24/7 basis, safe care is available to all patients attending the ED in the Mid West Regional Hospital, Limerick.  To suggest, as management has, that the issue of safe care can be addressed by adjustments to rosters, skill mixes and greater flexibility is simply untrue and confirms how detached management, in this hospital, is from the frontline and the needs of patients.

Members of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation involved in this dispute will provide a safe level of care tomorrow and will ensure that no patient is at risk as a consequence of this dispute.
