Public Protest March To Take Place This Sunday Against The Downgrading Of Services In The Midland Regional Hospital, Portlaoise 1.07.11

Press Release, 01.07.11

The community action group ‘Save Our Hospital’ has announced a public protest march for Sunday, July 3rd at 3pm in Portlaoise. This is in response to the HSE’s proposals to downgrade surgical and emergency services in the busiest regional hospital in the midlands. The action group expects thousands of people from Laois and the surrounding counties to attend the march and voice their anger and concerns over this impending downgrade.

INMO Industrial Relations Officer, Lorraine Monaghan said:

“Outside of the major cities, Portlaoise Hospital is the second busiest regional hospital in the country for emergency presentations. Last year the hospital saw almost 42,000 patients come through the doors of the Emergency Department. These figures speak for themselves and demonstrate the need to continue to run the ED on a 24/7 basis to serve the people of the region requiring emergency treatment. The INMO fully supports the ‘Save Our Hospital’ community action group and calls on the people of Laois and its surrounds to come out in force this Sunday.”

For the first six months of this year, 719 people have spent time on trolleys waiting for a bed in the hospital. This is a huge increase compared to 2010, when 136 people spent time on trolleys during the same period.

The march will leave from the County Hall at 3pm and will finish at the Hospital.
