Staffing Cuts Deferred In Cork University Hospitals. 30.05.11
Intensive discussions to begin immediately

PRESS RELEASE, Monday, May 30th, 2011

Following a meeting this morning, between the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation and management of Cork University Hospitals, the proposed cuts in agency staffing have been deferred to allow for intensive discussions, on the hospitals’ financial situation, and these discussions begin this evening.

At today’s meeting the INMO told the management side that they were in breach of the Croke Park Agreement, in the manner in which they sought to implement these staffing cuts.  The INMO also stated the hospitals’ financial situation, which both parties acknowledged was serious, required a hospital wide response, and not just cuts in frontline staff, and that the response must involve the curtailment/closure of some services in order to ensure safe care in the remaining services.

The intensive discussions are beginning this evening, will continue in the morning, and the INMO will be briefing its own members, in Cork University Hospital and Cork University Maternity Hospital, tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon.
