INMO Welcomes New Minister For Health - Dr. James Reilly. 10.03.11

PRESS RELEASE,  Thursday, 10th March 2011

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) welcomes the appointment of Dr. James Reilly to the post of Minister for Health and we wish him every success in this most challenging and important of ministerial positions.

The INMO also welcomes the commitment, in the new Programme for Government, to a single tier health system, which will ensure that access to care is determined by need rather than ability to pay.

Today, Thursday, 10th March 2011, the INMO has written to the Minister, seeking an early meeting with him to discuss:

  • the new Programme for Government and, specifically, the major reform programme for the health service;
  • the need to amend, immediately, the current recruitment moratorium due to its damaging impact upon nursing and midwifery and the provision of safe patient care; and,
  • the need to immediately reverse the decision, of the outgoing government, to cut the pay of fourth year undergraduate nurses and midwives on their rostered placement.

INMO General Secretary Liam Doran, speaking today, said:

“The appointment of the new Minister, taken with the radical reform programme, for the health service, contained in the Programme for Government is very welcome.

The INMO will work with the new Minister, and incoming government, in a joint endeavour to ensure that the necessary major reforms are made which ensures an end to A&E overcrowding, the provision of safe and appropriate care for all patients, the full utilisation of the nursing and midwifery resource and the lifting of this crude moratorium which is having a corrosive and damaging impact on patient care.

We look forward to an early meeting with the Minister and we will certainly work with him, and the new government, to deliver real, positive change to a health system, which is of benefit to patient care through the empowerment of frontline clinicians”.
