Mid Westen Regional Hospital, Limerick - Staff Despairing Regarding Patient Care And Safety. 01.02.11

PRESS RELEASE, Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

Members of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) are despairing regarding patient care and safety in the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick.

Imposed cruelty to sick children and adults continues at the hospital as a consequence of closed beds, shortage of nurses, the recruitment embargo and the unavailability of senior decision makers i.e. doctors.

Last night was one of the most difficult for staff at the hospital with 22 patients waiting in the Emergency Department for beds at 9pm.  This increased to 36 patients by early morning, 8 of whom were young babies and children.

Cots had to be erected within the Department to cope with unavailability of bed/cots in the Paediatric Unit where up to 7 beds/cots are closed.

Speaking this morning, INMO Industrial Relations Officer Mary Fogarty said:

“Staff are demoralised by having to continuously try to cope with the unacceptable overcrowding in the Emergency Department, and also throughout the whole hospital, where additional beds and trolleys were placed, in an attempt to alleviate this dangerous situation.

The further centralisation of hospital services in the Mid West cannot now proceed while situations like today’s are arising daily at the hospital, placing both patients and staff at risk.”
