INMO Highly Critical Of The Mercy Hospital, Cork Unreasonably Withholding Nurse Cover From Its Emergency Department. 13.01.01

PRESS RELEASE,  Thursday, January 13th, 2011

Members of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation based at the Mercy University Hospital, Cork are today shocked that, for the second time in seven days, management has failed to honour an INMO/Management agreement to provide at least 7 Registered Nurses on Day Duty and at least 6 Registered Nurses on Night Duty to care for Emergency Department patients in the Hospital.  The trolley numbers for this week were as follows:

Monday
17
Tuesday
9
Wednesday
13
Thursday
15

Speaking earlier today, Patsy Doyle, Industrial Relations Officer, said:

“The hospital has experienced a surge in acuity, and, patient attendances in the last three weeks and the patients need increasing nursing care rather than decreased.  Members are shocked that management would walk away from this firm commitment given to the INMO.

The INMO said that the Mercy University Hospital has a fine tradition of care and that that reputation is put at risk by this flagrant breach of an agreement on minimum staffing.

The INMO has today referred the unilateral breach of the agreement to the Labour Relations Commission for urgent attention.”
