Highest Ever Number Of Patients On Trolleys In Our Lady Of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda This Morning. 11.01.11

PRESS RELEASE,  Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Overcrowding in the Emergency Department of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda has reached unprecedented levels.  50 patients are being cared for on trolleys this morning in this hospital resulting in hardship and inhumane conditions for patients and staff.

According to INMO Industrial Relations Officer, Tony Fitzpatrick “The equivalent of two full wards are waiting for admission in the Emergency Department.”
He said:  “The situation is extremely dangerous for patients and staff and the INMO is calling for the hospital to be taken off call immediately.  The Organisation has also called for an urgent meeting with management who had given commitments that efficiencies would be put in place to alleviate over-crowding when they went ahead with re-configuration in the North East.  The INMO predicted that the levels of overcrowding would increase when beds were closed and hospitals downgraded across the region.  66 patients are on trolleys in the North East this morning while over 200 beds have been closed.”
