Chaos Reigns Again In Beaumont Hospital A&E

Up to 5 ambulances were delayed, and both patients and staff faced deplorable conditions in the A&E department of Beaumont Hospital this morning.

Over 50 patients were awaiting admission, and due to a lack of space and trolleys, 5 ambulances were delayed, in some instances, for hours.

This exacerbation of the ongoing difficulties facing the department results exclusively from the number of long stay patients within the hospital.

28% of the hospital’s bed capacity, up to 180 beds, are unavailable to acute patients, as the HSE continuously fails to provide the stream of long stay beds necessary to move patients into more appropriate accommodation.

Speaking this morning, INO Industrial Relations Officer, Eddie Mathews said:

“The number of long stay patients in Beaumont Hospital is at a record high. This is extremely concerning to our members as we enter the annual busy period, and is even more concerning as the pressure arising from H1N1 patients begins to be felt in the hospital.”
