INO Welcomes Evaluation Report On Nurse/ Midwife Prescribing. 09/10/09

PRESS RELEASE,  Friday, 9th October 2009

Irish Nurses Organisation warmly welcomes the publication today, by UCD, of its evaluation of nurse and midwife prescribing throughout the Irish healthcare system.

The evaluation confirms, the long held view of the INO, that nurse/midwife prescribing is a tremendous step forward for the Irish healthcare system as it brings tremendous benefits to patients and is perfectly safe with regard to the competence of the nurse/midwife with regard to prescribing.

The evaluation also confirms the need to continue with the programme of nurse/ midwife prescribing so that it becomes common practice, in all areas of our health system, again in the interest of patients, and the speedy implementation of the individuals care plan.

Nurse/midwife prescribing is reform and transformation in action and the INO will continue to work with the HSE and the Department of Health and Children to further develop this initiative in the interests of the patients and clients in our healthcare system.

Speaking this morning INO General Secretary said:

“The results of the evaluation confirm the effectiveness and efficacy of nurse/midwife prescribing.  We must now continue to expand this practice and we will work with the HSE to deliver this agreed objective.

The willingness of nurses and midwives to embrace this expanded role is the latest confirmation of their willingness to change to meet the needs of patients.  We look forward to further initiatives with regard to ordering diagnostic tests (e.g. x-rays) so we more fully utilise the competence of the nurse/midwife who is present on a 24/7 basis”.
