26 Bedded Care Of The Elderly Ward To Close In St Vincent's Hospital, Athy. 02/09/09

PRESS RELEASE

26 BEDDED CARE OF THE ELDERLY WARD TO CLOSE IN ST VINCENT'S HOSPITAL, ATHY

The INO has learned that a 26 bedded care of the elderly ward is to close in St Vincent’s Hospital in Athy. The refusal by the HSE to allow the hospital to recruit staff has led directly to the closure of this ward. This brings the number of beds closed in Co. Kildare to 50, due to the ban on recruitment imposed by the government. Hospital management informed staff of the closure at a meeting on Monday. This is a devastating blow to the people of Kildare and will inevitably lead to delayed discharges from Naas General Hospital, further compounding problems in the Emergency Department there.

Speaking today INO Industrial Relations Officer, Derek Reilly stated:

The limited information we have from the HSE is that they plan to close the ward in the next few weeks. The INO fear is that once this ward is closed it will never be reopened. Our elderly population are being forced to rely on private healthcare while the state neglects its duty to our elderly citizens. The ward has recently being refurbished with the people of Kildare contributing to this with generous donations.

Mr Reilly continued: Once again this indicates that, despite assurances from the HSE, it is frontline services and the elderly who are feeling the effect of the cutbacks. The INO is seeking an urgent meeting with the HSE and is calling on Kildare public representatives to bring pressure to bear on the Minister for Health and Children to allow for the recruitment of staff so that our elderly citizens can be cared for in St Vincent.
