INO Calls For Public, Political And Professional Scrutiny Of HSE Teamwork Report On Cork/Kerry. 09/06/09

PRESS RELEASE, Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

INO members in Nursing/Midwifery in Cork and Kerry are today examining the Teamwork Report which recommends radical change to health care delivery in the South of Ireland.

The INO welcomes all plans to appropriately fund and staff the Southern Hospitals and Community in the interests of patient and staff safety and it may well indeed lead to the creative opportunity that our members are seeking in Cork/Kerry.

However, the success of the Report is predicated on:

  • Presence of a Private Hospital in Cork University Hospital;
  • Success of the HSE Transformation Programme 2008 – 2011; and,
  • Success of Advance Paramedic and Ambulance System coupled with the provision of an Air Ambulance.

As the roll out of these projects is in limbo at present, it is difficult to visualise any real viable safe clinical change in the South.

In addition, the INO is calling on the HSE to formally engage with the:

  • Public who have funded the Report;
  • Politicians who have been mandated by the public to safeguard 24/7 services in Cork and Kerry; and,
  • Conclave of Directors of Nursing, Midwifery and Public Health whose expert views have not informed this Report.

According to Patsy Doyle, INO Industrial Relations Officer:

“The real success of this Report will challenge all the current managers of the health system in Cork and Kerry.

INO members seek the:

  • Immediate lifting of the ban on employment in our hospitals to facilitate stability in health care delivery and inspire confidence again;
  • Appointment of an Expert Senior Clinical Nurse/Midwife to plan and administer the practicalities required; and,
  • Offer jobs to graduate nurses who, together with their experienced colleagues, have so much to offer the change agenda.
