Nurses And Midwives Defer Strike Action At Sligo General Hospital. 25/05/09

PRESS RELEASE,  Monday, May 25th, 2009

- Urgent referral to Labour Court

Members of the Irish Nurses Organisation and SIPTU have agreed to defer Wednesday’s proposed strike action at Sligo General Hospital in order to have their grievances heard at an urgent Labour Court Hearing this week.

The INO, SIPTU and the HSE were involved in talks at the Labour Relations Commission today, Monday, May 25th with no resolution being reached.  The LRC recommended that the parties would agree to an urgent referral of the dispute to the Labour Court.  Following a joint members meeting, the unions indicated their agreement to abide with the Labour Relations Commission proposal.

Speaking this evening, INO Industrial Relations Officer, Noel Treanor said:

“The grievances of our members in respect of safe staffing levels in Sligo General remain very clear and we are committed to seeking a resolution to this dispute which ensures the best possible care for patients attending the Hospital.

The HSE have committed to retain all members currently on temporary contracts and not to institute any further changes, pending a recommendation.”

The Labour Court will inform us of the time scheduled for the hearing within the next 24 hours.
