Nurses To Lose Jobs In Sligo General Hospital. 27/04/09

PRESS RELEASE, Monday, April 27th, 2009

- INO members to ballot for industrial action

The Irish Nurses Organisation is to ballot its members for industrial action in respect of the loss of jobs for nurses in Sligo General Hospital as the HSE have indicated that they will not be renewing the contracts for 19 temporary nurses in the coming weeks.  They have also indicated that, due to financial constraints, a ward may close with further job losses. A meeting of INO members was held, where it was decided to oppose the management plan, through industrial action.
INO Industrial Relations Officer, Noel Treanor commented:

" Members in Sligo General have seen the numbers of nurses and midwives diminish over recent months and years, commencing with the release of the 2007 graduates.  The non-covering of maternity and other such leave, combined with the incremental reduction in numbers, has left our members concerned about their ability to provide a service, safely, at the current levels.

The latest reduction in the numbers of qualified nursing staff is a step too far and action must now be taken to call a halt."

Mr Treanor continued:

“Hard-pressed staff in Sligo General are trying to hold together a demand-led service with fewer and fewer resources.  If the Department of Finance moratorium on the filling of posts is implemented, it can only have a devastating effect for the service in Sligo."
Balloting of members will proceed over the coming days.
