INO Members In Killarney Community Hospital Have Voted Unanimously For Industrial Action Commencing With A Lunchtime Protest On Monday, April 27Th From 1.00-2.00p.m. 24/04/09

PRESS RELEASE, Friday, April 24th, 2009

Members of the Irish Nurses Organisation, employed within Killarney Community Hospital, have voted unanimously for industrial action. The need for this action has arisen due to the unilateral imposition of changes in nurse management structures within the hospital which will result in the elimination of the Director of Nursing post from April 24th.

Speaking today Michael Dineen, INO Industrial Relations Officer, said:

“Our members employed within Killarney Community Hospital have clearly demonstrated their rejection of the HSE’s imposition of changes within the management structure in the Hospital.

These changes have been imposed upon our members without recourse to prior consultation or negotiation despite the fact that this Organisation had sought a deferral of the changes to allow consultation to take place.

The position of Director of Nursing has primacy within nurse management structures and is at the very core of an efficient operation of any hospital.  The decision to unilaterally remove this post within Killarney Community Hospital has been taken without recourse to any clinical or nursing evaluation of the consequences of its elimination on the hospital, its patients and staff.

It is unacceptable to this Organisation that people who are not clinically qualified to evaluate the outcome of this decision, have taken a unilateral decision to remove a key nursing post central to the delivery of an effective service to the elderly population of Kerry.

We have served notice to the HSE of our intention to commence industrial action.

In the interim, until the appropriate notice has expired, our members will be conducting a lunch time protest at the gates of the Hospital between 1.00 p.m. and 2.00 p.m. on Monday April 27th next.”
