INO Members To Stop Work In Bantry General Hospital On Tuesday April 21St 2009. 15/04/09

PRESS RELEASE,   Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

Members of the Irish Nurses Organisation at Bantry General Hospital have voted in favour of industrial action at the hospital, which will include a one hour work stoppage and lunchtime protest on Tuesday next, April 21st, 2009 from 12.30p.m. – 1.30p.m.  Emergency cover will be provided during the stoppage. The members have voted 91% in favour of industrial action in response to management’s targeting of frontline staff due to alleged budgetary constraints.

INO members are determined to:

• Fight the termination of graduate nurses’ contracts.
• Fight the removal of a 3rd nurse on night duty to cover the casualty area of the hospital.
• Fight the closure of 14 surgical beds at the hospital.

Speaking earlier today INO Industrial Relations Officer, Patsy Doyle said:

“Our members have lost confidence in the management of acute services at Bantry Hospital by the National Hospital Office of the HSE South. Faced with alleged budget constraints they immediately targeted frontline staff thus causing fear among the staff of the hospital, as well as the population of West Cork, for the future of their emergency services at Bantry.

INO members are committed to defending a full emergency, surgical and medical service 24/7 in Bantry and call on the remaining staff and the general public to support the action on April 21st by petitioning the HSE to stop the cutbacks in the hospital..”
