Crippling Overcrowding in Beaumont Hospital Emergency Department. 21/01/09

PRESS RELEASE Wednesday, January 21st, 2009
________________________________________________________________________

This morning there are 50 patients on trolleys in the Emergency Department of Beaumont Hospital, awaiting admission. This department is neither built nor staffed to cater for the needs of so many admitted patients.

Speaking this morning, Eddie Mathews, INO, Industrial Relations Officer said:

“This level of overcrowding is persisting on an almost daily basis and is having a crippling effect on our members’ ability to deliver safe and quality patient care.

It is symptomatic of the number of long stay patients that the hospital are unable to discharge as no beds are available in suitable alternative facilities. Nurses in this department are totally exasperated by the continuous and mounting workload with no end in sight, given that all initiatives thus far have totally failed to provide relief to this department.”
