Ward Closure At Portiuncula Hospital Will Adversely Affect Patient Care. 18/12/07

PRESS RELEASE. Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

St. Clare’s Ward, a 24 bed female/gynaecology ward, in Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe, Co Galway is to close from Sunday, December 23rd, 2007 until the end of January 2008.  This closure is as a direct result of the embargo, by the HSE at national level, on recruitment and replacement of frontline staff.

There is a staffing deficit of 11.5 nurses and 7 health care assistants as well as portering and allied health professionals.

The failure of HSE management, at senior national level, to enable local management to replace and recruit vacant frontline positions has led to this decision which will have an adverse affect on patient care.

Speaking this morning, Noreen Muldoon, INO Industrial Relations Officer said:

“Obviously the INO abhor this decision, but realise that the same service cannot be provided with this enormous shortage of frontline staff. Confirmation of this ward closure directly contradicts the HSE assertion that the cutbacks would not affect patient care and frontline services.

The real people to suffer, in this situation, are the patients and the INO are calling upon the HSE to lift this current embargo on frontline staff, including our INO nursing members, to enable them to care for the population of Ballinasloe and its environs with the numbers of beds available in the hospital”.
