Midwives At Portlaoise General Hospital Vote To Commence Industrial Action. 11/09/07

PRESS RELEASE, Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

A ballot by the INO of its members in the Maternity Unit of Portlaoise General Hospital on Monday night, September 10th, has resulted in a 100% vote in favour of industrial action in pursuit of safe staffing levels at the unit.  The industrial action will commence on Tuesday, October 9th at 8.00a.m. and may take the form of a work to rule, work stoppages, and withdrawal of labour.

This follows a series of meetings between the INO and HSE Midlands where no agreement was reached on appropriate staffing levels.  While the HSE have proposed a limited increase in staffing numbers, it falls far short of the midwives’ expectations and the numbers necessary to deliver safe standards of mother and baby care.

Speaking this morning, INO Industrial Relations Officer, Joe Hoolan said:

“The midwives will no longer accept the situation on this unit where mother and baby care is compromised due to inadequate staffing levels and they are now left with no option but to commence industrial action in order that safe standards are maintained and that the projected increase in expectant mothers who will be attending this unit are adequately cared for.

21 days notice has been issued to the HSE Midland Area but in the interim the INO remain available for discussions.”
