INO To Meet With HSE (South) Tomorrow To Discuss Outstanding Issues Surrounding The Opening Of Cork University Maternity Hospital. 21/03/07

PRESS RELEASE,  Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

INO To Meet With HSE (South) Tomorrow To Discuss Outstanding Issues Surrounding The Opening Of Cork University Maternity Hospital

INO members in Erinville and St Finbarr’s Hospitals have this afternoon received clarification from the Labour Court in response to staffing levels at Cork University Maternity Hospital.  The Court has declared that it is their view that the complement of staff would include qualified midwives and nurses and has considered pupil midwives as part of that number.

The INO is concerned at this development, which is not reflective of the Marie Washbrook Report, where students were measured at 2.5 student midwives on clinical placement equating with one trained midwife.  The Organisation has sought guidance from An Bord Altranais in this regard.

In a positive attempt to move this issue forward, the INO will meet with management tomorrow, at 12 noon, on the following issues:

  • To discuss the 375 posts;
  • Outstanding issues in the Labour Court Recommendation; and,
  • A concrete timeframe for the completion of the staffing review.

On receipt of this information we will proceed to ballot our members.

Speaking this evening, INO Industrial Relations Officer, Patsy Doyle said:

“The INO has informed the HSE (South) that we will continue to serve the public from the existing sites of Erinville and St Finbarr’s Hospitals while we have concerns on safe staffing levels for the new facility in Wilton.”
