Details Of Nationwide Work To Rule To Be Announced At Lunchtime Protests In Limerick And Galway. 01/03/2007

Joint Press Release,  Thursday, March 1st, 2007

The Irish Nurses Organisation and Psychiatric Nurses Association will announce the commencement date, nature and format, of a nationwide continuous work to rule at lunch time protests which are being held at University College Hospital, Galway and the Regional Hospital Limerick tomorrow, Friday, 2nd March 2007.

The nationwide work to rule will mark the latest phase of the two unions’ campaign for a 35-hour working week, and other priority pay issues, which has been commenced following a 96% endorsement by the membership of both unions.

Hundreds of nurses are expected to gather at both venues to hear details of the next phase of the campaign and to demonstrate their anger and frustration at the lack of progress on these issues.

Speaking today Liam Doran INO General Secretary said:

“The INO and PNA have now decided to escalate the campaign due to the complete failure of management to engage on these issues with a view to making progress.  As each day passes the frustration of our members, nationwide, increases as they hear the one line retort of ‘go to benchmarking’ from management grades who obtained a pay increase without going to benchmarking.

The two unions will announce the commencement date of the nationwide work to rule, tomorrow, and the proposed format will undoubtedly severely disrupt the administrative systems and running of the health service”.

Des Kavanagh, General Secretary, PNA, concluded:

“The escalation of the campaign was inevitable when management failed to accept our invitation to talks.  However, we will continue to ensure that our members provide nursing/midwifery care.”
