Crisis at Kerry General Hospital. 14/02/07

Press Release, Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

The Irish Nurses Organisation has called on management of Kerry General Hospital to actively manage the unsafe situation that prevails within the Accident and Emergency Department at the hospital. Staff are regularly faced with up to 15 patients on trolleys, awaiting in-patient beds, when they come on duty, which results in the Medical Assessment Unit being used as an overflow for the A&E. Unfortunately this has been the norm for sometime.

Speaking today, Michael Dineen, Industrial Relations Officer, said:

“Once again nurses are bearing the brunt of the inadequate management of the difficulties within the Accident and Emergency Department of Kerry General Hospital.  There does not appear to be any strategic management of these issues and management seem happy to struggle from day to day providing a fire brigade response rather than having a cohesive structured plan to deal with the problem.

We are calling on management to work with the INO in ensuring that adequate admission and discharge policies, coupled with an appropriate escalation policy similar to that which exists in all other Band 1 hospitals, are immediately put in place within Kerry General Hospital.

Failure to do so by February 27th next will leave us with no alternative but to ballot our members for industrial action in order to protect their professional well-being and the well-being of the patients that they care for in what can only be described as a totally unsafe and hazardous environment”
