INO To Host A Public Information Meeting On Cork University Maternity Hospital. 12/0206

PRESS RELEASE, Monday, February 12th, 2007

Midwife and nurse members of the INO will host a public information meeting regarding Cork University Maternity Hospital on Thursday next February 15th at 8.30 p.m. in the Kingsley Hotel. Interested members of the public and public representatives are invited to attend.

This meeting is being called in response to stark concerns for the safety of maternity services in Cork if the HSE continues to steam roll the opening of the new maternity hospital without the required numbers of midwives and nurses in position.

Speaking earlier today, Patsy Doyle, Industrial Relations Officer said:

“Our midwife and nurse members are extremely worried at the continued denial of the HSE South in the face of international recommendations for the staffing of Cork University Maternity Hospital.

On Thursday, the INO will provide the people of Cork with the facts regarding:

  • CUMH will be the only maternity hospital within an 80 mile radius of Cork.
  • Over 8,000 deliveries are expected in the first year of opening.
  • The obligation on midwives/nurses to raise concerns to the employer if they see unsafe systems of work.
  • The acute shortage of nursing staff in the Cork University Hospital.
  • Shortfall in midwives currently in post in the St. Finbarr’s and Erinville Hospitals.”

We invite all interested parties to attend this important meeting.
