INMO Welcomes HIQA Report And Remarks On The Potential For Growth Of Mallow General Hospital 20.04.11

Press Release, 20.04.11

Members of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO), at Mallow General Hospital, have read and considered yesterday’s HIQA report. The INMO contends it is a public policy document rather than a report specific to Mallow General.

The Organisation continues to commend the Director of Nursing, in Mallow General, and her team, who have championed patient advocacy, safe clinical systems and effective budget controls, set against the background of a “fractured governance system” at the Cork University Hospital Group.

Earlier today, INMO Industrial Relations Officer, Patsy Doyle, called on the HSE South to put in place a number of necessary measures at the hospital, as follows:

  • To commence the Day Services building development immediately;
  • To advertise for Advanced Nurse Practitioners;
  • To fill all vacant nursing positions;
  • To share the governance of the CUH Group with Mallow as there is an untapped potential for sharing of a €300m resource for the benefit of all patients in Cork;
  • To cease the reliance on 130 agency nurses and midwives at CUH/CUMH and move to direct employment immediately.

“All of these measures are in the patient’s best interests”, Ms Doyle concluded.
