Members Update - 21st June 2020

Dear Member,

Four key updates on our recent and upcoming work:

First, we are presenting to Oireachtas and government committees on two vital issues for members: childcare and infection rates among staff.

On childcare, we have long pushed the government for a solution to this problem, involving media campaigns, lobbying, cases before the Workplace Relations Commission. We secured the right for workers with childcare needs to stay at home and receive full pay if necessary, but we are still seeking a solution for the government to provide or pay for childcare.

Using data from a survey of over 1,800 INMO members, we will be arguing this case again at the Oireachtas COVID response committee on 23rd June. You will also likely see media coverage from us on this over the coming week.

On infection rates, data we received from the HSE gives greater detail on how healthcare workers are getting the virus. We will be presenting this data, along with our proposed solutions to the nursing homes expert panel on Monday. We have also making an Oireachtas submission on tracking and tracing. We will continue to pursue stronger worker protections for you with the government and the Health and Safety Authority.

Second, a draft programme for the government has been provisionally agreed by Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, and the Green Party. We wrote to the party leaders at the beginning of this process, and are glad to see that several of our key recommendations made it into the document, including:

We will work to hold the next government to account to these and other key issues for members.

Third, the expert review of nursing and midwifery, which will first examine pay of nurses and midwives in management grades has confirmed that it will hold its first meeting in July. This start date is unacceptably late, so we have secured advance meetings in the meantime with the chairperson of the review group, to ensure that our case is made clearly and rapidly. I will update members as this progresses.

Finally, the INMO’s professional development webinar series is continuing following our successful launch event. To mark Pride 2020, the webinar will look at the specific issues and approaches to making healthcare LGBT+ inclusive, including in care of the elderly services and in providing pre and post-natal care to LGBT+ families. The webinar will be on Wednesday 24th, but registration is open now, hereThe event is free.
