National Economic Dialogue June 2016

The second National Economic Dialogue, which involves the government and all major stakeholders (ICTU, employers, NGOs) took place, in Dublin, on last Monday/ Tuesday, 27th/28th June 2016.

The INMO was represented at this national engagement by our Director of Industrial Relations Ms. Phil Ni Sheaghda, and General Secretary Mr. Liam Doran through their membership of the Executive Council of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.

The purpose of this dialogue is to allow all major stakeholders, in wider society, engage with government as part of the formulation of the budget for 2017.

Each participating organisation is asked to make an opening statement outlining, in summary form, its priorities, for the budget, and other critical issues at this time.

The ICTU opening statement, which was presented by its General Secretary Ms. Patricia King, can be accessed here.  As can be seen the statement calls for the government to prioritise investment in critical public services including health, housing and education.

It should be noted that, in the closing session of the summit, Mr. Pascal Donohoe TD, Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, confirmed that, in both the programme for government and, more immediately, the budget for 2017 the government was prioritising housing and the health service for immediate investment.

A full report on the summits proceedings will be produced, in due course, and will be published on this website and summarised in a future edition of the World of Irish Nursing and Midwifery journal.
