    Nurses and Midwives Bill 2010

10th June 2010
Dear Member,

The INMO's comments and proposed amendments to the nurses and midwives bill 2010 which goes to committee stage in the Dail in the next two to three weeks can now be here.

This document has been forwarded to the Minister for health and Children, Ms. Mary Harney, TD, and we expect to meet with her in the next week to ten days to discuss same.

In addition the document has been sent to all other political parties and independent TD's.  I would ask you to study the document and, if possible, to bring it to the attention of your own local public representatives asking them to support the amendments we are seeking.

This is a most important piece of legislation, which will, determine nursing and midwifery practice for the next 25years so it is vital that we make every effort to ensure it reflects the needs of nurses and midwives while protecting the patient at all times.

It is very much in your interest to lobby on this matter so please do everything you can with you local TD's. Click here to read the document.

Yours sincerely

Liam Doran, General Secretary

PRESS RELEASE,  Issued by INMO on Thursday, April 22, 2010

INMO Welcomes Publication Of The Nurses And Midwives Bill 2010

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) warmly welcomes the publication today (Thursday) of the Nurses and Midwives Bill 2010. This new legislation, which was first recommended by the Commission on Nursing in 1998, is long overdue and is required immediately to reflect the much changed environment within which nurses and midwives practice.

It is vital that the new legislation fully addresses such pivotal issues as:

  • Ensuring competency by each individual nurse/midwife;
  • Clearly stipulates the responsibility of health employers to make sure nurses/midwives access continuing professional development opportunities to ensure highest standards of practice;
  • Ensure that the public and patients are assured that nurses and midwives act appropriately at all times; and,
  • Ensures the necessary infrastructure for nurse/midwife undergraduate and post graduate education is in place and maintained.

The INMO particularly welcomes the historical development which recognises, for the first time in this country, the separate and distinct professions of nursing and midwifery.

Speaking this evening Liam Doran, INMO General Secretary said:

“The INMO has been waiting many years for this legislation which is needed to underpin modern nursing and midwifery practice.

The INMO will now examine every section of the proposed legislation and put forward amendments where we feel further strengthening/definition is required.”

Mr Doran concluded:

“We look forward to a detailed and constructive debate, on this important legislation, in the Dáil and Seanad and its early passage leading to enactment at an early date.”
