Response to the
Department of Health and Children
Regarding the Public Consultation
on the Extension of Prescriptive
Authority to Nurses and Midwives

Consultation on the Extension of Prescriptive Authority to Nurses and Midwives

The Irish Medicines Board (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2006, Number 3 of 2006 contains an enabling provision for the extension of prescriptive authority to nurses and midwives subject to regulations to be made by the Minister of Health and Children.  The Act is available at: http://www.oireachtas.ie/documents/bills28/acts/2006/A306.pdf.

The Department of Health and Children invited public consultation on the extension of prescriptive authority to nurses and midwives to inform the preparation of the Statutory Instrument to provide for Regulations which closed on Monday 3 July 2006.

The Irish Nurses Organisation on behalf of members submitted a detailed response to support the extension of prescriptive authority to all nurses and midwives across all health care settings through the provision of dedicated funding to support the profession in the clinical environment and access to the appropriate education programmes.
