INO Commences Nationwide Ballot to Protect Existing Pay and Conditions of Employment
Executive Council Recommending YES Vote
Attention All Members
Dear Colleague
The Executive Council of the INO has decided to commence a nationwide ballot of members, for industrial action, up to and including the withdrawal of labour, in order to ensure INO participation in the campaign, with other public service unions, to protect existing pay and conditions of employment.
The Executive Council took this decision in the context of the following:
1. The decision, by government, to abandon the pay increases agreed as part of T2016, and their continued refusal to negotiate an agreed alternative.
2. The fact that nurses and midwives, together with all other public servants suffered a significant reduction in salary, of up to10%, last April.
3. Despite this it would appear the government, supported by some sections of the media and other misguided commentators, is determined to come back with more cuts to the pay of all public servants.
4. The need to ensure that the INO is in a position, with other unions in the public service, to take whatever action is necessary to protect and maintain existing pay, allowances and conditions of employment in the face of this threat.
5. Any industrial action taken, if the ballot shows a mandate for same, will be in conjunction with other public service unions both within the health and wider public service.
6. The balloting process commences immediately and must be completed, in all workplaces by, 11.00 a.m. on Monday, 9th November 2009, with the count taking place immediately thereafter.
7. The dates and times of information meetings, and balloting should be determined locally and notified to all members. (Please click here for (notices which can be filled in, with the local details, and displayed on all noticeboards).
8. Guidelines are being issued, to branch officers/local representatives, to assist in the provision of emergency/essential cover if/when industrial action, involving the withdrawal of labour, occurs as part of this multi-union campaign.
9. An INFORMATION SHEET, outlining the background to the ballot and the recommendation for a YES vote, is attached and should be copied and displayed on all noticeboards.
THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS BALLOT, AND THE NEED TO OBTAIN A STRONG MANDATE, CANNOT BE OVERESTIMATED.
Against this background you are now asked to liaise closely with your local Industrial Relations Officer, and agree whatever arrangements are necessary to facilitate information meetings and balloting opportunities in the context of this strong recommendation for a YES vote.
Thank you, most sincerely, for your invaluable help and assistance on this most critical of issues.
Yours sincerely
