Re: Breakdown in Social Partnership Talks – Government Announce Public Service Pension Levy

Update No. 10 - 04 February 2009

Dear Colleagues,

I refer to my previous updates re the Social Partnership Talks and specifically the breakdown in the process early on Tuesday morning.

As you will know the Government has now announced that it intends to introduce legislation, in early March, providing for the introduction of the pensions levy previously rejected by all Public Service Unions.

The details surrounding this levy, as provided by Government to date, are again attached to this update for your convenience and information.

Over the past 24 hours the INO has been in the media highlighting the fact that this Government proposal, does not have any union agreement, is inequitable, unfair and imbalanced. We have also had a large volume of feedback from members throughout the day.

The INO Executive Council is holding a special meeting, next Monday 09 February, at which it will;

  • examine the details of the Government’s proposal, including the legislation; and
  • assess the feedback from members (see INO website at  www.INO.ie) and other Public Service Unions.

Obviously this pension levy will apply to all public servants.  Therefore any response to this decision by Government must be collective if it is to succeed in achieving a more equitable, fair and balanced outcome which involves a contribution from all sectors of society based upon their ability to pay.

Further updates will issue should there be any further developments, and, specifically, following next Monday’s special meeting of our Executive Council.

Please bring this notice to the attention of all members in your workplace.

Thanking you for your help and assistance at this time.

Yours sincerely
