Campaign Strategy to Reverse Public Sector Pay Cuts
Dear Colleague
I refer to my previous newsletters in relation to the government’s decision to pass legislation providing for the imposition of pay cuts, on all grades in the public service, with effect from 1st January 2010.
I now wish to confirm that the Public Services Committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU), continues to finalise the elements of a sustained campaign of resistance and non co-operation in response to these pay cuts. This campaign will seek the reversal of these pay cuts while also protecting pensions and preventing compulsory redundancies within the public service.
It is now planned that the details of this campaign, which will apply in different ways in different sectors within the public service, will be finalised, and put into circulation by all unions, on Monday, 4th January 2010.
In that regard the INMO (please remember that we change our name from 1st January 2010) will be putting in place a nationwide communications strategy to ensure that all activists and members are made aware of the campaign of resistance, as it applies to them, in the early days of the New Year.
This “strike back” campaign of resistance and non co-operation, in response to the government’s decision to impose, through legislation, pay cuts will be strong and sustained in the first weeks of 2010. A successful campaign will require commitment, solidarity and determination and the INMO, together with other public service unions, is absolutely committed to ensuring all members understand and appreciate how they must participate in this process.
May I close by once again wishing you, your family and friends a very happy and peaceful Christmas and may the next few days be restful with 2010, despite everything, bringing you good health and peace of mind.
Yours sincerely
LIAM DORAN
General Secretary
