The INMO is Ireland’s largest professional trade union for nurses and midwives with a membership of well in excess of 40,000.
The Organisation’s members work in all areas of the Irish healthcare system, both public and private, including clinical, educational and management in both hospital and community settings.
The INMO is wholly owned by its members who elect an Executive Council (22 members), every two years, whose function it is to implement the policies of the Organisation.
These policies are determined by delegates, on behalf of the Organisation’s 41 geographic branches and 24 sections/special interest groups who elect delegates to attend the Organisation’s Annual Delegate Conference in May of each.
With this organisational structure, which is rooted in maximising the participation of members working in the frontline, the Organisation’s policies accurately reflect the objectives, goals and requirements of our growing membership.
Implementing the Organisation’s motto “Working Together” the INMO provides a unified voice for the professions of nursing and midwifery and provides strong leadership in matters affecting the standing of the two professions in the eyes of the wider community.
On a day to day level the Organisation has a staff of 60 (approx) led by a General Secretary, with his management team, 12 regional Industrial Relations Officers, Professional Development Department, Information Department, Library and Research Department and Administrative Support.
The Organisation has its head office in Dublin with regional offices, or staff, in Kilkenny, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Castlebar, Sligo, Tullamore and Cavan.
All of the Organisation’s services originate from the needs of members, in the workplace, and the work of the locally elected branch/section officers and individual workplace nurse/midwife representatives. These are the most pivotal link in the Organisation’s structures and the Organisation spends significant resources in providing our local representatives with the necessary education and training to allow them to carry out their work on behalf of their colleagues locally.
The INMO is affiliated to a number of national bodies including the Irish Congress of Trade Unions - ICTU (the INMO has two representatives on its Executive Council), the National Women’s Council of Ireland (NWCI) and a range of other organisations whose work is of concern to the INMO.
Internationally the INMO is affiliated to a number of organisations including the International Council of Nurses (ICN), the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) and the European Federation of Nurses (EFN).
Arising from these affiliations, both national and international, the INMO also seeks to influence the wider policy agenda and the matters would be of importance and concern to the Organisation’s membership.
The INMO is a constantly growing, and evolving, Organisation always seeking to meet the needs of its growing membership in the areas of industrial relations, professional development, education and research. It is the undoubted voice of four out of every five nurses/midwives working in Ireland and it has an excellent track record in achieving the goals and objectives of its members.
