Nursing/Midwifery Retirements - On Or Before 29Th February 2012
Dear Colleague
The Health Service Executive (HSE) has advised the INMO, in recent days, that over 1,600 nurses/midwives have indicated to date, their intention to retire from the public health service on or before 29th February 2012.
The INMO has written, to both the Minister and the HSE, demanding immediate discussions on this issue. These discussions must lead to the drawing up of agreed arrangements to deal with this exodus of so many expert nurses and midwives in a manner which ensures safe practice and avoids excessive workloads on front line staff.
In the context of these discussions we are still awaiting a breakdown of the grades, of nursing and midwifery staff, who are retiring and their specific workplaces/ locations. However initial reports suggest that almost all grades, and practically every workplace, will be affected by these retirements.
The drawing up of contingency plans, which must involve the filling of posts, to deal with this uncontrolled downsizing is an absolute priority at this time. We will keep all members informed of developments on this issue.
It is also suggested, that, in some situations, the members retiring intend to continue working as nurses/midwives in the growing private and nursing home area. In that we are reminding these members to maintain INMO membership.
Yours sincerely
LIAM DORAN
